15 Maine Coon pictures of cats and kittens, folk art gardens, Art Deco and a Starry Night harbour.
Fifteen Maine Coons in as many painterly moods: a mother with her three kittens among the daisies, a crowd of cats peering out of a patchwork, a black cat framed in Art Deco gold and teal, a white longhair among lilies in the manner of Mucha, and a ginger tom on the harbour wall under a swirling starry sky. These puzzles are all Maine Coon cats - the big, shaggy American longhair often called the gentle giant. They come from Maine, where they are the official state cat, and they look it: tufted lynx-tip ears, a ruff around the neck, oversized paws and a tail like a plume.
That coat is why they make such good jigsaws. Fur runs in long, readable directions. Tabby stripes break a large body into pieces you can actually follow. Ear tufts, white chin blazes and the bottle-brush tail give you landmarks when the rest of the picture is “more brown fluff.” Brown classic tabby with white is the look most people know, but Maine Coons also come in red, cream, black, tortie and plenty of bi-colours, so this gallery is not fifteen copies of the same cat.
In real life they are sociable, often a little dog-like, and they chirp or trill more than they meow. In a picture you mainly notice the scale. A grown male can weigh around 18–22 pounds and they keep filling out until they are three to five years old, which is why some of these images look more lion than house cat.
