A Short History of the Jigsaw Puzzle

The jigsaw puzzle began as a teaching tool. In the 1760s, a London engraver and mapmaker named John Spilsbury mounted maps onto thin wooden boards and cut them apart along country borders. Children reassembled these "dissected maps" to learn geography, and for decades puzzles remained mainly educational toys.

By the early 1900s, puzzles had become a popular pastime for adults too. They were cut by hand from wood using fine saws, which is where the name "jigsaw" comes from, and many were sold without a picture on the box, making them far harder than today's puzzles. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, cheaper die-cut cardboard puzzles brought the hobby to millions of homes, and weekly puzzles were even sold at newsstands.

The hobby has never really gone away. Jigsaw sales surged again in 2020, when people around the world spent more time at home. Today, online jigsaw puzzles carry the tradition forward, offering the same satisfying challenge with endless pictures to choose from and every piece always accounted for.

Why We Love Jigsaw Puzzles

Part of the appeal is simplicity. A jigsaw asks for nothing more than patience and a good eye, yet it gives back a steady sense of progress with every piece that clicks into place. Many people find that the focused, unhurried attention a puzzle needs helps them set aside everyday worries for a while, much like other calm, absorbing hobbies.

Puzzling also gives the brain a workout. Matching shapes, colors, and patterns draws on visual perception, memory, and problem-solving, and researchers have found that jigsaw puzzling engages several of these thinking skills at once. While scientists are still studying whether puzzles offer lasting protection for the brain, there's little doubt that they're a relaxing, screen-friendly way to keep the mind active.

And of course, there's the moment of finishing. Watching a scattered jumble turn into a complete picture is genuinely satisfying, and with online puzzles, the next one is only a click away.
