Orchids are one of the most exquisite flowering plants, their flowers have developed to attract insects that love the nectar held deep inside the flower. In some cases it has developed to an extent that only one species of insect (a bee or moth) is attracted to the flower and can pollinate the plant so that it can set seed and reproduce in the wild. Nature is indeed fascinating and wonderful.
The commercial propagation of orchids however is not by seed (although it is used to develop new cultivars), it is usually through the cultivation of plant cells, often in laboratory type conditions, with artificial light and in glass dishes, or test tubes in a nutrient rich agar type material. After the small plants develop they are "potted up" into a more traditional growing media in pots and grown on inside a glasshouse, or outside depending on the geographic location of the nursery. When the orchid is reaching the flowering stage they are sent to retail shops or stores (or you can buy them online) and you can buy them for a relatively small amount of money, when that is you consider the time, effort and money used to propagate and grow them.
Orchids often flower for many weeks, sometimes months and if you do not overwater them they will continue to flower for many years to come, so please do not throw them out after flowering, keep the orchid plant and look after it and it will reward you with beautiful flowers the following year. You can purchase specialist orchid compost online or from your garden store if you want to put the plant into a larger pot and remember to feed the plant once every 4-6 weeks with a liquid fertiliser to keep the plant healthy.
